Sun Care FAQs

Sun care refers to products designed to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Using sun care products, such as sunscreens and sunblocks, is crucial to prevent sunburn, premature ageing, and skin cancer. Regular application of sun care products helps shield your skin from UV damage and maintains its health and appearance.

Selecting the right sun care product depends on your skin type and concerns. For oily or acne-prone skin, opt for a lightweight, non-comedogenic sunscreen. For sensitive skin, choose products with minimal fragrances and gentle ingredients. If you have dry skin, look for sunscreens with added moisturisers. Always select a product with broad-spectrum protection (UVA and UVB) and an SPF of at least 30 for effective protection.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and indicates the level of protection a sunscreen offers against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. For example, an SPF 30 means you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than without protection before getting burned. Higher SPF values offer increased protection, but no sunscreen can provide 100% protection. It’s important to reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

You should apply sun care products generously and evenly to all exposed skin about 15-30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. Even on cloudy days or when indoors, UV rays can still affect your skin, so regular application is key to maintaining protection.

While sun care products significantly reduce the risk of skin damage and related health issues, they cannot offer complete protection. It’s essential to use sun care products in conjunction with other protective measures, such as wearing protective clothing, seeking shade, and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours (10am to 4pm). Consistent use of these combined strategies helps safeguard your skin’s health.
